Alzheimer’s Disease is another form of neurodegenerative disease that has been examined by clinical psychiatrists and psychologists — specifically, in how the progression of cognitive impairments and neuropsychiatric symptoms can be controlled through introducing music therapy. Music therapy — again — has been introduced as a significant form of method in fostering neuropsychological, cognitive and social behaviors for patients with Alzheimer’s through diversified clinical trials. In a particular study consisting of forty-two patients that were diagnosed with mild to moderate AD that underwent a form of music therapy for six weeks, patients were assessed through a personalized and tailored Mini-Mental State Examination, Neuropsychiatric Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. When these participants were assessed, significant improvement in memory, orientation, depression and anxiety were reported in both mild and moderate cases. As these subsequent impacts were evident after solely four music therapy sessions, researchers continue to propel their findings to establish a closely interrelated tie between music therapy and cognitive neuroscience – specifically, for those with neurodegenerative diseases.
